Chivirico

description

Chivirico, situated about 68 kms west of Santiago, is reached by a new Tarmac road through wonderful scenery, the road runs along the edge of the Caribbean with superb views to the towering palm clad Sierra Maestra. There are many small bays and beaches along the way, some with black sand, and at most you will have the beach to yourself. Many of the villages in this area have connections with events associated with the revolution and at Ulvero about 20 kms west of Chivirico there's a small museum and a monument marking the attack by Castro and his men on the Batista Headquarters on 28 May 1957. A further 20 kms westward along the road there is a turning for Pico Turquino at 1,974m the highest point in the Sierra Maestra - you can park and walk through magnificent mountain scenery.
