Cayo Largo
description
The small island resort of Cayo Largo is situated just off the south coast of Cuba in the Caribbean Sea. The island is famous for its bird and marine life with some of Cuba's best scuba diving to be found nearby as well as excellent bone fishing. Clients looking for the real Cuba will not find it on Cayo Largo though there are some excellent, secluded beaches away from tourist hotels which form a row along 1 side of the island. Due to the the threat of hurricanes, Cayo Largo is on an effective stop sell during September & October.
Beaches
Cayo Largo has some of the most beautiful beaches in Cuba. As all 8 hotels are situated on the same side of the island visitors who want a beach to themselves need only hire a scooter or bicycle and explore the other parts of the island. Cayo Largo is also the only resort in Cuba where (on selected beaches) nudity is permitted.
Excursions
As an island resort the most popular activity tends to be trips to neighbouring cays such as Cayo Iguana which is inhabited by hundreds of the reptiles and to Cayo Rosario, which is similar to Cayo Largo but without as yet the development. There are also a number of air excursions to the mainland.
Food
Aside from the hotels, Cayo Largo only has 1 or 2 simple restaurants which mainly cater for day-trippers from the mainland.
Getting There
Despite its proximity to Cuba's south coast the only way tourists can get to Cayo Largo is by the daily charter flights to the island from Havana. As part of the charter package clients will be picked up from their hotel in Havana (usually early in the morning) and on arrival in Cayo Largo will be taken from the airport to their hotel. The same applies for return trips from Cayo Largo to the mainland. There are no ferries between Cayo Largo and the south coast of Cuba.
Hotels
The hotel situation in Cayo Largo is in something of a limbo at present. As a result, the only 2 hotels that we currently recomend are the best on the island, the Sol Pelicano & its slightly superior sister hotel, the Sol Club Cayo Largo.
