Like Baracoa on Cuba's south-eastern tip, few visitors make it to this interesting town which dates back to the 16th century. Although a relatively sleepy town now, in the 19th century Bayamo was at the centre of Cuba's independence struggle against the Spanish and it is still possible to find numerous monuments dotted around town that commerorarte this role. Today most visitors either simply pass through Bayamo on their way to or from Santiago or use it as a jumping off point to exploring the Sierra Maestre. From Bayamo it is also possible to climb Cuba's highest peak, Pico Turquino, at just under 6,500 feet.

Getting There

Although there is an airport at Bayamo linking it with Havana, flights and far and few between. The best way to visit Bayamo is by hire car although we can arrange private road transfers from both Santiago (2hrs) and Camaguey (3hrs).

Hotels

Although there are a couple of hotel on the outskirts of town, the best option by far is the Royalton which is located in the very centre of town.
