Just Havana

Founded in 1519 and built around a huge natural harbour this was once the largest port in the region. As with much of Cuba, Havana’s Old City retains much of its time-warp charm with narrow cobbled streets opening on to large Plazas with a mixture of Baroque and neoclassical buildings.

The whole of the old city has UNESCO World heritage status and is bounded by the original city walls with a large network of defensive fortifications. The oldest Spanish Colonial fortress, the mighty Castillo de la Real Fuerza sits on the western end of the harbour hemmed in on one side by the Plaza des Armas one of Havana’s lovely garden squares.

Just a short stroll away is Cathedral Square which houses the Cathedral de San Cristobal, one of the oldest Cathedrals in the Americas.
