Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean with a mix of colonial towns, beautiful countryside and beach resorts.

Cuba’s capital city, Havana, is located towards the western tip of the island and is the largest city on the island by some way.

To the west of havana is the province of Pinar del Rio, home to some of Cuba’s most beautiful countryside including the vinales las terrazas .Along the coast are also two of Cuba’s most popular uncommercial beach resorts, cayo levisa & maria la gorda

Central Cuba, to the east of Havana, is home to the colonial towns and cities of cienfuegos trinidad sancti spiritus santa clara & remedios and is the most popular part of the island for visitors interested in the country’s history. The countryside in central Cuba is also very scenic, home as it is to the Escambray Mountains.

Continuing east, the island becomes increasingly flat with sugar plantations and cattle ranches. There is very little modern development in this part of Cuba and the towns of camaguey , Las Tunas & holguin make good stopping off points.

Approaching the eastern end of the island the terrain again becomes much more mountainous as one drives from the town of bayamo through the famous Sierra Maestre and on to the city of santiago , the second largest in the country. The famous town of Guantanamo is a short drive east of Santiago while, further along the coast, is baracoa , the oldest colonial town in the Americas.

Cuba is also famous for its many spectacular beaches, the majority of which line the north coast all the way east of Havana. jibacoa is the nearest resort to Havana while varadero is the island’s largest beach resort. Just off Cuba’s north coast are a series of island resorts such as santa maria cayo ensenachos cayo guillermo and cayo coco which are all joined to the mainland by causeway. Continuing east along the mainland are the resorts santa lucia and then guardalavaca

Although the majority of Cuba’s beach resorts are located along the north coast, Playa Ancon near Trinidad has a lovely beach while the island of cayo largo in the Caribbean Sea has some of Cuba’s finest sandy beaches.

Getting to Cuba has never been easier. Voyager Travel offer a wide variety of scheduled flights to Cuba and, by offering daily flights, we are able to tailor clients’ holidays to their exact requirements.

Virgin Atlantic fly direct from London Gatwick to Havana every Thursdays & Mondays throughout the year with an additional Saturday flight between November and the end of March. Flights are operated by 747s with a choice of economy, premium economy and upper class. Not only do Virgin offer the best and most direct scheduled flights to Cuba they are also usually the best value for money.

Cubana Airlines no longer fly directly from the UK but have a substantial local network within Cuba

In addition to direct flights there are also a number of indirect flights between the UK and Havana, many of which offer the added benefit of regional departures from airports such as Bristol, Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow & Aberdeen.

air france operate from numerous regional UK airports to Paris and then on to Havana. Flights operate daily during the winter and normally 5 times a week over the summer. It is possible to combine Air France flights and KLM flights.

klm also fly 3 times a week from Amsterdam to Havana with connecting flights from all over the UK. KLM provide a 2 class service while Air France offer a choice of economy, premium economy and business class. It is possible to combine Air France flights and KLM flights.

The quickest way to get across Cuba is by air. There are domestic flights from Havana to the majority of the island with the most popular flights being to Baracoa, Santiago, Holguin and the various island resorts such as Cayo Largo, Cayo Coco and Cayo Santa Maria.

Travelling by air is obviously the quickest way to get around but doesn’t allow visitors to see anything of the island. We can arrange holidays from one to four weeks taking in the key highlights of Cuba. Driving in Cuba is very safe and, with so little traffic on the road, very straightforward.

For client who don’t wish to hire a car we can also arrange pre-booked, private transfers between almost any two points in Cuba. These transfers are in modern, air conditioned vehicles with experienced drivers who know the quickest route.

The cheapest way to travel around Cuba is by tourist bus These buses are safe, reliable, comfortable and great value and follow some of the key tourist routes such as Havana to Vinales, Vinales to Trinidad via Cienfuegos, Havana to Trinidad via Cienfuegos and Havana to Santiago via Santa Clara and Camaguey. Accommodation

As specialists in tailor made holidays to Cuba, Voyager Travel feature over old havana not to mention a vivacious culture. spread right along the length of the island. Voyager Travel offer accommodation in well over 100 hotels right across Cuba, with everything from simple 2* hostel style accommodation to luxury 5* resorts. For clients who have booked their own international flights we are happy to book accommodation on its own for a minimum of 7nts (split between different hotels if so required).

All Inclusive

Although the situation is very different in the towns and cities few countries in the world have such a high proportion of All Inclusive beach hotels as Cuba. As a result of its recent political past Cuba still lacks the infrastructure of private bars and restaurants that are to be found in many other countries. In addition, many of Cuba's new beach resorts are well away from local centres of population requiring an instant solution as to how guests are going to eat and drink. However, probably the governing factor in their growth has been their resounding popularity. Not only do All Inclusive hotels offer excellent value for money they also offer the convenience of knowing that everything has been paid for in advance as well as the bonus of not having to carry your money around with you at all times. Please note that there is a significant difference between some of the simpler All Inclusive hotels (which are more akin to Full Board) and the top All Inclusive resorts. Please note also that clients staying at All Inclusive will be required to wear wristbands that distinguish them as guests of their particular hotels; this is to prevent non-guests from taking advantage of the All Inclusive bars etc.

Beach Hotels that are not all Inclusive

Some 98% of Cuba’s beach accommodation is found in All Inclusive resort style complexes. These range from simple, locally run 2* hotels to luxury 5* foreign managed properties, almost exclusively along Cuba’s north coast. For clients who prefer, smaller, less commercial hotels there really are just a handful of options in Cuba such as Maria La Gorda, Cayo Levisa, Villa Las Brujas & Villa Maguana. We know all of these hotels first hand so please phone for specific advice.

Boutique Hotels

The closest that Cuba comes to a international-standard boutique hotel is the Saratoga in Old Havana. Even here facilities fall slightly short and service can be a bit inconsistent for a top hotel. See also Luxury Hotels / Heritage Hotels.

Building Work

Cuba is a year-round destination and as such there is no off-season when repairs and renovations can take place without some impact on visitors. However, any renovation work is most likely to take place between May & November.

Buses

Viazul the Cuban State run bus company operates regular, reliable coach services linking Havana with Pinar del Rio and Vinales to the west and the towns of Trinidad, Santa Clara, Camaguey, Santiago and Baracoa to the east. Car Hire

Car hire is limited in Cuba and no International Car Hire companies are allowed to operate so it is best to pre book especially at busy times. Driving in Cuba is safe and roads are remarkably un-crowded. If you want to get to the heart of how this fascinating country works (and engage in some time travel) then there is no better way than hiring a car for a few days. We can arrange different pick and drop off locations and integrate car hire with bus travel and private transfers if you wish. Casa Particulars

These are private homes that are licensed to accept foreign tourists as paying guests, effectively home-stays. Unfortunately due to Cuban Government restrictions we are unable to book casa particulars or provide transfers between them but, for clients who are keen to stay in one or more, we are happy to leave part of the itinerary open allowing clients to make their own arrangements. If you are looking for this kind of experience then it is often best to combine this with car hire as many properties are away from the centre and can be a bit difficult to reach especially with luggage. Probably the best place in which to experience a casa particular is Vinales, 2hrs drive west of Havana. Please note that due to government restrictions there are no casa particulars in beach areas and very few in Old Havana. Standards vary considerably and are often fairly basic with shared bathroom so if possible it is best to check out the accommodation before parting with any payment.

Check-in / Check-out

Although there are always exceptions to the rule, as well as flexibility at individual hotels depending on how busy they are at the time, check-in is normally 3 or 4 pm and check-out 12 noon.

Cigars

Cuba is famous for its world famous cigars which can be purchased for a fraction of the cost they command in the UK. Most of Cuba’s tobacco comes from Pinar del Rio province to the west of Havana where visitors can see cigars being made in the traditional way. Cigars are also made at the Partagas cigar factory alongside the Capitol Building in Old Havana.

Clothing

Cuba is a largely informal country so smart attire (ie jacket and tie) is seldom required. Most restaurants / hotel restaurants will ask that clients do not wear shorts or sandals in the evening but that is about as strict as it gets. As with most tropical climates you are advised to wear natural fabrics such as cotton. During Cuba’s winter months, December-March, it can occasionally get quite cool in the evening so a pullover or light jacket is required. This is particularly the case in places such as Las Terrazas.

Cuban Hotel Guests

The law was changed in 2008 and Cubans are now allowed to stay in the same tourist hotels as foreign visitors. The realty of the situation is that very few Cubans can afford to stay at these hotels although, in less developed parts of the island, locals will sometimes be allowed daytime use of facilities such as the swimming pool.

Domestic Flights

Being such a large island means that domestic flights play an integral part in a great many holidays to Cuba and as a result efforts have been made to improve the local network both in terms of the flight options available and in the quality of service provided. Many of the main routes, Havana to Holguin and Havana to the offshore islands, are now served by a modern fleet of ATR turbo Prop aircraft with daily departures. We can co-ordinate car hire collection or drop off at some airports and arrange transfers from any airport in Cuba to you hotel.

Driving

To hire a car in Cuba you must be at least 21 years and hold a valid national driving licence. Voyager Travel are specialists in fly drive holidays to Cuba but can only book car hire for a minimum of 72hrs as part of an itinerary. It is not possible to self-drive classic American cars although they can be hired by the hour with a driver in Havana.

Entry Requirements

Holders of United Kingdom passports require a valid 10 year passport valid for at least 6 months after the date of return from Cuba, return airline ticket and Cuban Tourist Card which Voyager Travel can arrange. The cost of the Tourist Card is £15 which will be added to the cost of the booking. No application forms, photos etc are required. Please note that all travellers, including infants, must have their own passports.

Fishing

Cuba is a popular destination for both deep-sea fishing and bone-fishing. Although not experts, we can often help point clients in the right direction.

Flights

Getting to Cuba has never been easier and at Voyager we offer a large choice of flights with a wide selection of regional departures. We fly with most of the major scheduled airlines operating to Cuba. Outbound flights almost always leave the UK & Europe in the morning or early afternoon arriving in Cuba the same evening while return flights tend to be overnight, getting back into the UK & Europe the following day. Where flights are non-stop the journey time from London, Paris or Madrid to Havana is approximately 10 hours with return flights normally an hour shorter.

Food & Drink

Although nobody would claim that Cuba was famous for its cuisine the situation has improved markedly in recent years. The main development has been the 'paladars' which have sprung up all over Havana and in other Cuban towns and cities. Paladars are small, family run restaurants set up in people's gardens, living rooms and patios, anywhere in fact where there is sufficient space for a few tables and chairs. These paladars offer possibly the ultimate in home cooking and are very good value at £5-10 for a meal. The majority of beach hotels are now run on an All Inclusive basis with meals provided buffet style. In the superior All Inclusive hotels there will also be one or more a la carte restaurants to choose from. Away from the beach, dining in hotel restaurants can be a very disappointing experience so we always recommend that clients eat out wherever possible. Beer and rum are the favoured drinks in Cuba and the quality of both is high. It is rum that most often captures the imagination usually in the form of one of the many cocktails for which the island is famous. Take your pick from a daiquiri, mojito, cuba libre or cubanito amongst others. Cuban coffee is also very good and is usually taken espresso style.

Habaguanex

A sort of cross between the National Trust & English Heritage, Habaguanex is the commercial offshoot of the Historical Office of Old Havana, the organisation that is charged with renovating Old Havana. The majority of hotels, bars, restaurants and shops in Old Havana are operated by Habaguanex with the profits generated being reinvested in further economic and social development in Old Havana.

Health Requirements

There are no compulsory vaccinations required for travel to Cuba which is also malaria-free. For detailed information / advice on health issues, clients are advised to consult their local GP or visit www.masta.org

Heritage Hotels

Due to its Spanish heritage Cuba towns and cities are blessed with a legacy of fine colonial buildings some of which have been converted into hotel accommodation. Old Havana is awash with what we refer to as ‘Heritage’ or Character’ hotels but they can also be found in Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Sancti Spiritus, Remedios, Camaguey, Santiago & Baracoa. Hurricanes

Cuba has a sub-tropical climate suitable for travel all year round. However, the best time to visit is generally during our winter when the weather is cooler, less humid and drier. Insurance

It is a condition of booking that clients take out travel insurance. When arranging insurance it is very important to note that American owned insurers will not provide cover for travel to Cuba.

Internet Access

The majority of All Inclusive beach resorts, and an increasing number of hotels in the towns and countryside, now offer internet access at reasonable rates.

Language

The official language is Spanish but English is widely spoken in and around beach hotels and in the main tourist locations. In the countryside you may struggle to find anyone who speaks English so it’s a good idea to take a phrase book with you especially if you are on a fly drive itinerary.

Luxury Hotels

Although the standard and variety of accommodation available has improved markedly over the years, Cuba still lacks genuine, world class accommodation. The stand out beach hotel is the Royal Hideaway Resort in Cayo Ensenachos while the best urban hotels are the Melia Cohiba and Melia Habana in downtown Havana, the Hotel Saratoga & Parque Central in Old Havana and Iberostar Grand in Trinidad. Accommodation in the countryside is almost always locally managed and simple in style.

Mobile Phones

Reception has improved significantly in recent years although it is still far from universal reception is normally possible at the larger beach hotels and also in most major towns.

Money

Tourists will generally only use the convertible peso (CUC) which trades at near parity with the US$ (1 CUC = $1.10). Cuban Convertible pesos are unavailable outside of Cuba. You may change UK Sterling, Euros or US Dollars into convertible pesos at banks, bureau de change and most tourist hotels though there is currently a 10% tax for converting US$ into convertible pesos. Cash machines are extremely rare in Cuba and should not be depended on. Visa and Mastercard are accepted in Cuba though you should check with your card issuer to make sure your own card can be used. Credit cards issued by American banks cannot be used in Cuba. We would recommend against taking debit cards. Travellers cheques can be used in Cuba unless issued by an American bank.

Music

Cuba is famous for its music and there are numerous venues where you can go to hear live music. Most large towns will have a Casa de la Trova with live, nightly music, almost always of a very high standard. Entrance is seldom more than 1 peso with as many locals as tourists in the audience. There will usually be a number of different acts together with a bar to help fuel your enjoyment.

Petrol

Fuel is permanently available at CUPET petrol stations, many of which are open 24hrs a day. Although stations are not as frequent as in the West, running out of fuel is not something that visitors should worry about. Petrol prices are typically slightly lower than in the UK.

Security

Cuba is one of the safest tourist destinations in the world. Violent crimes against tourists are extremely rare. However, cases of bag snatching & petty thieving are on the increase in the cities and visitors should take all the normal precautions with their belongings – do not display valuable jewellery and always use the safe in your room for valuables, cash and passports. We recommend that you do not leave your passport at reception – unless in a secure safe. Any loss of these valuable documents should be reported immediately. We also recommend that for all flights you take any valuables in your hand luggage and, if you have one, take a hard suitcase for the hold (unless hiring a car in which case we recommend soft bags that fit into boots more easily)

Scuba Diving

Cuba's popularity as a scuba diving destination keeps on growing, in part because it represents such good value but also because its ample coastline and waters offer extensive and largely untarnished dive sites. Scuba diving in Cuba is recommended for experienced divers with a minimum of 10 logged dives who, to coin a phrase, can plan a dive and dive that plan. For such divers, we would recommend the dive centres at Cayo Levisa & Maria La Gorda to the west of Havana. For inexperienced divers or those wishing to dive for the first time we can recommend the dive school in Guardalavaca and the free diving lessons at Sandals Hicacos and Sandals Beaches. Other dive destinations include Santa Lucia, Santiago, Trinidad & Cayo Largo.

Shopping

Shopping is not one of Cuba’s great strengths. Even in Havana you will find very few shops and those that there are offer a very poor range of goods. The daily market in Old Havana provides a better bet with the occasional interesting buys amid the usual tourist pap. The most popular shopping items in Cuba are undoubtedly cigars which are far cheaper than in the UK. If you are offered cigars on the street don’t waste your money. They might look like the real thing but the vast majority are fakes (a good present for the boss perhaps). Other popular buys include Cuban rum and coffee.

Single Supplements

Almost all hotels in Cuba charge on a per person basis, rather than per room, with single supplements for sole occupancy. Although the odd hotel may occasionally waive its single supplement during low season, single supplements are a fact of life in Cuba. Generally speaking, the better / more expensive the hotel, the higher its single supplement will be and vice versa.

Time Difference

Cuba is 5hrs behind the UK during the summer and 4hrs in winter.

Tipping

Once outlawed, tipping is now widespread in Cuba. With average wages of just 20-30 pesos a month, tips go a long way in supporting a great many Cubans and their families. Despite that we would still urge clients to only tip adequate or good service – bad service should never be rewarded. Tips should be in whole numbers not percentage terms. Try and get hold of as many 1 peso coins as possible – you’ll be surprised how fast they disappear.

Tourist Cards

A Tourist card is required by most travellers to Cuba. This acts as a Visa waiver and your passport is not stamped at immigration. Voyager are authorised by the Cuban Consulate to issue Tourist Cards and this will be issued along with your travel documents. The cost of the Tourist Card is £15 which will be added to the cost of the booking. No application forms, photos etc are required.

Tours

Our escorted Tours are a great way to see the island especially if you are travelling alone. All are with experienced English speaking guides and group sizes are small. Departures especially during the winter months are frequent and with some tours we have an upgrade package to superior accommodation. The Escorted tour itineraries are fixed but we can individually tailor your holiday with additional time (either at the start or the end) at the beach, in the countryside or city. Trains

There have been railways in Cuba longer than in many European countries and there has been an electric railway in Havana for over a century. However much of the rail network in Cuba has been in steady decline for over a half a century and is now in a state of almost continual neglect through lack of funding. For the train traveller who just wants to get from one place to another this poses difficulties and delays. For the rail enthusiast though this is like train heaven as many of the engines especially around the sugar mills are still powered by steam.

Transfers

We are able to pre-book private, a/c taxi transfers between most tourist destinations within Cuba. Departure times are advised locally by a representative.

Vaccinations

Voltage is usually 110v though some of the newer hotels operate on 220v. American style, 2 pin plugs are the most common type of connector but if you have any of your own electrical appliances with you its best to take an international converter plug. If you need batteries for anything also take these with you as it can be difficult to get all but the most common types locally.

Watersports

Cuba is an ideal destination for watersports of all kinds. The majority of beach hotels in Cuba are All Inclusive and include a variety of watersports included in the price. In Super Inclusive hotels such as Sandals Hicacos & Breezes Jibacoa this will include a wide variety of watersports with full instruction, often including scuba diving and waterskiing. At the other end of the scale, in some of the simpler All Inclusive hotels, there will be limitations on the variety, quality and availability of the watersports provided.

Windowless Rooms

Many of the older ‘heritage style’ hotels in Old Havana and other colonial towns in Cuba are actually old houses that been converted into hotel accommodation. Due to the nature of colonial architecture, some of these buildings are built around internal courtyards and have relatively few external windows. As a result, pretty much every such hotel has a number of rooms that have windows that face onto internal courtyards. In a few cases such as Los Frailes in Old Havana there are no windows in some rooms.

The roads in Cuba are largely traffic free so transferring between destinations is a straightforward and hassle-free option. All vehicles have air conditioning.

The vast majority of our clients will begin their holiday with a few days in Havana before heading off on their travels. Clients then have the option of either heading west to the beautiful countryside of Las Terrazas & Vinales Valley or east to the cultural heartland of the island, home to the colonial centres of Cienfuegos Trinidad, Sancti Spiritus, Remedios and Santa Clara.

The majority of clients will limit themselves to three or centre holidays but, equally, we have many clients who want to see much more.

Similarly, the majority of clients on their first holiday to Cuba will stick to the western half of the island but, for those keen to see as much as possible, it is very straightforward to keep on travelling east to Camaguey, Bayamo, Santiago and even Baracoa at the far eastern tip of the island. Voyager Travel offer both one and two week escorted group tours of Cuba. Our fourteen night Highlights of Cuba Tour operates every Sunday throughout the year. The first week incorporates the Pearl of the Caribbean tour taking in the highlights of western Cuba. For the second week of the tour clients fly east to Holguin, visiting Baracoa, Guantanamo & Santiago before returning to Havana for a final night.
